My life changed for the better over 2 years ago when I walked into Organic Chemistry I at Rutgers University. Orgo is known as the nightmare class and still is, who knew taking organic chemistry will change my life!
Two weeks into class, I walked in an hour early and met a girl named Faten and eventually through Faten I met Murad. I still remember Murad going on and on about his brother’s wedding and how he was in charge of booking the hotel rooms. All I knew at that point was that his sister- in-law- to- be was bringing rabbits with her from Chicago to NJ and let’s just say, Murad was not very excited about them. Over time, he also randomly mentioned “Thaakat” in some conversation. Finding that name and concept interesting, I went home, Googled it and went on Facebook and liked their page to learn more.
To be honest I did not expect much from Thaakat. Then one fine morning, Uzma Bawany messaged saying she is looking for a board and wants to open a chapter. I replied saying count me in, I was ready to do whatever I can.
Murad and I started the paperwork to set up the chapter at Rutgers. Unfortunately, we got rejected. Officials believed we were too much like an organization that already existed at Rutgers. We definitely were not happy with this decision. Later, Uzma chose to message me asking if I can come to Rutgers and speak with someone.
My first time meeting Uzma is quite a memory – poor Uzma had to drive first time in NJ all by herself. She got a little lost in Rutgers and it took us about half an hour to find each other. We finally met at Seminary Place and from that day onwards, she introduced me to something so big and great that words cannot describe.
When Uzma and I went in to see how we can register Thaakat, we were rejected once again. I remember Uzma taking a stand and saying there was no way am she was taking no for an answer.
Who knew that organic chemistry class we all hated would introduce me to something and someone so great!
